SEO: The Danger of Being Number One

After working as a SEO consultant for a 10 yrs, I understand the danger of chasing number one.

Whenever a business owner meets a SEO consultant the first and most dangerous thing out of every new prospects mouth is…

I want to get my business to number one in Google for the most common key words.

This is fine for some companies but the truth is for smaller to medium business’s this can often become a costly trap and a target they may not ever have needed to aspire for in the first place.

You see in any industry the time, effort and most importantly money it takes a SEO consultant to rank your business at “number one” in Google,

May be too great a target and you run the risk of running out of these resources long before making an impression on Google’s first page…let alone number one.

But why would it not be every company’s goal to be number one? You ask…

To understand why number one may not be ideal spot for your business, we need to firstly look at your company’s delivery capacity.

After all it’s no point in chasing 1000 new leads per week if you only have the capacity to truly convert 200 new leads into customers and deliver your product or service to them.

This is where a lot of business owners get caught in the web of lies that is perpetuated by so many black hat marketers in the SEO consultant Gold Coast market, that have filled the market with their false promises’ of “Rank number one in Google in 24hrs guaranteed” etc…

These SEO consultants Gold Coast are often not acting in Googles SEO best practice guides

The problem is the cost associated with getting your business ranked at number one compared to say ranked number four in Google….Why spend all that extra money chasing number one.

Another mistake business owners make is chasing the most common and highly competitive key words…for example if you are and electrician based on the Gold Coast then the key word “Gold Coast Electrician” would be a high competition key word, with 10,000 searches per month.

But going back to my previous point, do you need anywhere near that many leads?

Whereas the key word phrase “fast response electrical services Gold Coast northern suburbs” might only have 1500 searches a month, but be very low competition and you would have a stronger chance at ranking number one for this key word

This would deliver enough enquiries to your business to meet your marketing and operational goal.

So when planning your strategy with your SEO consultant Gold Coast it is critical to know exactly what it is you require in leads and enquiries and base your strategy around that.

Number one on Google might be sexy…but is it profitable?
